Rat Roadhouse

Closed Rattery

What is a closed rattery?

A closed rattery is one that does not allow visitors. The purpose of this is to help insure the health & well being of the current rats.

Why a closed rattery?

Pathogens that can cause a variety of rat illnesses and death too often do not show right away. Too often well-meaning and/or ignorant people put rats at risks when they visit a rattery.

Many rodents can carry diseases that can be harmful or deadly to rats. Petstores often harbor these illnesses due to either wholesale breed-mill style breeders, from customers who travel from one petstore to another, or from customers who have sick animals at home.

Outside quarantine, (meaning quarantine at a seperate location for a period of at least two to three weeks), is an effective means to prevent the transmission of these germs or illnesses. However human visitors may harbor the same germs and/or bacteria on them. Rather than wait until we have lost rats due to illnesses that could have been prevented, we have decided to close the rattery to visitors.

What does this mean to adopters?

While we understand the desire to play with all of our rats and meet their parents, we feel that it is more important to maintain and adopt rats in the best possible health. We will gladly provide photographs, discuss cage set ups, and do our best to answer any other questions that an adopter may have.

We will gladly make an appointment to meet with the adopter at a convenient location. If the adopter feels the rat is not suitable, they need to only discuss any concerns.

This site is dedicated to the memory of the rainbow bridge rats.
