Rehoming
Rats
Most rats have an average lifespan of
only two years. However, too often owners find
themselves in a position where they feel the need to
surrender their rat(s). We hope that the homes the
rats go to will be better, and certainly more
permanant.
Tips on ensuring a good placement
Always screen potential adopters.
Ask about any rat experience. Make sure they are
aware of all of the basics. Provide them with a
care sheet.
NEVER list a rat free to a good
home, or on Freecycle. The homes that they are
going to are rarely quality 'homes', but usually
a dinner date.
Ask for a small fee for the
rat(s), or better yet, sell them with their cage
& supplies. A new owner is more likely to
plan on keeping them for pets if the make an
investment.
Speak with them during a time
when you will not be interupted. This way you are
less likely to make a snap judgement call that
you can regret later.
Surrender - Rescues VS Shelters
Many rescues are reputable -
however some are not. Warning signs include
overcrowded and dirty living conditions, animals
being picked up improperly, large quantities of
animals. Some 'rescues' turn around and breed
from these animals, or worse - allow them to die
of untreated medical issues.
Shelters such as the ASPCA may or
may not take rats. If they do, be sure to ask
their practices on euthanization.
